A routine traffic stop in Mesa on the evening of July 29 culminated in a substantial narcotics seizure and an arrest that expanded from a vehicle search to a residential search warrant. Police stopped a vehicle in the 200 block of South Dobson Road at about 7:30 p.m., detained the driver and, following investigative steps at the scene, uncovered packaged drugs and thousands of dollars in cash. The driver, identified as 24-year-old Jesus Octavio Lopez-Lopez, was taken into custody and later booked into jail on multiple felony counts.

Detectives said they initially observed the driver commit multiple traffic violations before initiating the stop. During the encounter, Lopez-Lopez consented to a search of his vehicle. A narcotics detection dog conducted an open-air sniff and alerted officers to the presence of drugs. Officers then located individual packets of suspected controlled substances inside the vehicle accompanied by stacks of cash. The packaging and presentation of the materials at the scene led investigators to characterize the items as being readied for sale rather than for personal use.
Information gathered during the vehicle search prompted investigators to obtain a search warrant for the suspect’s residence. Executing that warrant, detectives say they recovered additional quantities of illegal drugs, as well as what they describe as sales paraphernalia and more currency. The evidence seized from both the car and the home was cataloged and submitted as part of an ongoing investigation into distribution and related offenses.
Overall quantities listed by investigators show a substantial haul: 1,518 grams of suspected methamphetamine — a figure that exceeds three pounds — accompanied by 96 grams of suspected fentanyl and 15 grams of suspected heroin. Law enforcement also seized $5,733 in U.S. currency during searches of the vehicle and the residence. Those totals, officers indicated, reflect the combined findings from the traffic stop and the subsequent home search.

Following the arrests and evidence collection, Lopez-Lopez was formally charged with multiple felonies, including possession of narcotic drugs for sale, possession of dangerous drugs for sale and money laundering. Booking records show his bond set at $25,000. At the time of the latest court paperwork, he remained in custody and was scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 5 to face the charges lodged against him.
Investigators processed the scene on both the roadway and at the residence, documenting narcotics packaging, currency and items commonly associated with distribution activity. The narcotics detection canine played a role in the initial discovery by alerting officers to the presence of drugs during the traffic stop, which led to the vehicle search and ultimately provided the probable cause necessary for the residential search warrant.
Authorities said they seized the drugs and cash as evidence in what prosecutors will present as part of the case against Lopez-Lopez. The case file will include the inventory of seized items — the 1,518 grams of methamphetamine, 96 grams of fentanyl, 15 grams of heroin and $5,733 — along with officer reports that detail the traffic stop, the canine alert and the execution of the search warrant. Lopez-Lopez faces the upcoming court date where those charges will be addressed through the legal process.
