A mechanical issue left the Tucson Processing and Distribution Center without power on Tuesday, forcing the closure of the facility's retail lobby while postal box holders continued to have access to their boxes during regular hours. The outage, reported at the main processing facility near 22nd Street and Kino Parkway, did not halt mail delivery or processing within the local network.

The center, identified as the Tucson Processing and Distribution Center, serves as a central hub for sorting and routing mail in the area. On Tuesday, operations staff identified a mechanical problem that resulted in loss of electrical power at the site. Despite the interruption to building systems that serve the public-facing retail lobby, the sorting and delivery elements of the mail network were maintained and continued to function within the local processing infrastructure.
Mail-processing personnel redirected workflow so items could continue moving through the regional network. Officials managing operations indicated there was no immediate interruption to the flow of mail to carriers and customers; packages and letters were being processed through alternate systems and local network channels while repair crews addressed the power issue.
The retail lobby at the main post office inside the processing center was closed to customers for the duration of the outage. Customers who rely on counter services — such as purchasing postage, sending packages, or using teller services — were instructed to use other nearby retail locations. Post office box customers were able to access PO Box lobbies at the facility during normal hours, allowing renters of boxes to retrieve or deposit mail despite the closure of retail counters.

For customers needing retail services, several nearby post office stations were provided as alternatives. The Sun Station, located at 2100 E. Speedway Blvd., is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Silverbell Station at 975 N. Silverbell Rd. is available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Coronado Station, at 255 N. Rosemont Blvd., offers weekday service from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is also open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. South Tucson Station, located at 2420 S. Sixth Ave., provides limited weekday retail hours from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Customers were encouraged to visit those locations for transactions that could not be handled at the processing center while the retail lobby remained closed.
Crews were on site working to restore power to the processing center, and there was no estimated time provided for when full electrical service would be reestablished. While technicians and maintenance staff worked to identify and repair the mechanical issue that triggered the outage, the operational priority remained keeping mail moving through the local network and ensuring that PO Box access stayed available to customers during normal hours.
City residents and mail customers were asked to plan for redirected services by using the alternative stations listed above if they needed retail transactions. The outage was confined to the building systems that support the public retail lobby and did not extend to the processing equipment and delivery schedules that manage the flow of mail for the Tucson area. As repair work continued, the focus remained on restoring all services at the processing center as quickly as possible.
