James W. "Jim" Phillips, 88, died May 25, 2026, in Tucson, Arizona. He was born on September 17, 1937, in Albany, Georgia, the son of Mabry Stone Phillips and Carolyn Smith Phillips. A graduate of Albany High School in the class of 1955, Phillips went on to pursue higher education at Auburn University, where he earned two bachelor’s degrees — one in mechanical engineering and another in industrial management.

Phillips built a career in the semiconductor industry that took him far from his Georgia roots. He joined National Semiconductor and spent much of his professional life working abroad, including assignments in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Those years overseas punctuated a career that combined technical skill with an appetite for travel and cross-cultural connection; colleagues and friends from those postings became a durable part of his life story.

After a period of retirement in Tucson in 1985, Phillips returned to Bangkok for a subsequent stage of his professional life, joining AMD and working there for eight years. He retired permanently to Tucson in 1994. That combination of long stretches abroad and extended residence in Arizona marked much of his adult life, shaping both his work and his social circle.

Friends and family recall Phillips for a personality that matched his international experience: warm, intelligent, kind and quick with humor. He was known for a particular delight in dining out — the obituary notes he enjoyed eating all his meals away from home and was well known and much liked by the wait staff at Tucson restaurants. He laughed readily at his own jokes and was remembered for a generous spirit that those close to him say was a consistent feature of his life.

A member of Catalina Foothills Church, Phillips maintained ties to community and faith alongside his professional pursuits. He is survived by two brothers, Bubba Phillips and his wife Gay, and Carlos Phillips and his wife Sheila; a nephew, Trip Phillips and his wife Karen; and a niece, Carolyn Phillips. The family issued special thanks to Herb and Diane Welhener, Pete and Leslie Wells, and George Babich for providing loving and attentive care during Phillips’s final days when family members were not present. The family said their generosity and presence brought comfort.

The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be directed to the Gospel Rescue Mission, 4550 S. Palo Verde Road, Tucson, AZ 85714, or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Those who wish to mark his memory in another way were offered the option to have trees planted in a National Forest in his honor. An online guest book and pages for memories and condolences were made available for friends and acquaintances to share remembrances and support.

This obituary was published by the Arizona Daily Star from June 1 through June 3, 2026. Memorial arrangements and additional information regarding contributions or the online guest book are available through the published notice. The family’s notice records a life that combined technical accomplishment, international experience and enduring personal warmth, and it lists the people who survive him and those the family thanked for care in his final days.
