A 34-year-old man identified as Alejandro Daniel Ruiz Leon died after his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck near Valencia Road and Cardinal Avenue early Sunday morning. A fatal collision early Sunday morning left a 34-year-old motorcyclist dead and a passenger injured near the intersection of Valencia Road and Cardinal Avenue. Law enforcement personnel responded to the scene after the motorcycle struck a pickup truck while the bike was traveling westbound on Valencia. The rider was transported to a hospital but later succumbed to his injuries, while his passenger suffered wounds described by investigators as non-life-threatening.

The rider has been identified as Alejandro Daniel Ruiz Leon, 34. Authorities reported that Leon was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. In contrast, the person riding as his passenger was wearing a helmet and survived the collision, though the passenger did sustain injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Beyond those medical characterizations, officials have not released additional information about the passenger's condition or whether that person was taken to a hospital for treatment.

According to investigators, the motorcycle was headed west on Valencia Road when it collided with a pickup truck that was making a left turn from the eastbound lanes. The sequence of the collision, as described by the Pima County Sheriff's Department, indicates the turning pickup intersected the motorcycle's path, resulting in the impact that fatally injured the rider. The two occupants of the pickup were evaluated at the scene by emergency personnel but were not transported to a medical facility.

Responding deputies and emergency responders secured the scene and carried out initial assessments of the people involved. The rider was transported to a hospital by medical personnel after first responders arrived, but he later died from his injuries. The driver and passenger of the pickup remained at the scene long enough to be checked by responders and were subsequently released without being taken to the hospital, according to investigators.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department stated that preliminary findings in the crash investigation included factors of speed and impairment on the part of the motorcycle rider. Those determinations were reported as part of the department's ongoing inquiry into the circumstances that led to the collision. Beyond noting speed and impairment as factors, investigators have not released additional specifics about those findings, and the investigation remains active as deputies continue to gather evidence and piece together the full sequence of events.

Investigators are expected to continue processing the scene, conducting interviews with witnesses and the occupants of the pickup, and reviewing any available surveillance or traffic camera footage that might help clarify the moments leading up to the impact. As part of that work, the Pima County Sheriff's Department will seek to corroborate the initial observations that the motorcycle's speed and the rider's impairment contributed to the crash. Officials have not yet announced whether any citations or charges will be filed pending the conclusion of the investigation.

At this stage, authorities have released the basic facts of the collision: a westbound motorcycle struck a turning pickup truck at the Valencia and Cardinal intersection; the motorcycle rider, Alejandro Daniel Ruiz Leon, was not wearing a helmet and later died after being taken to a hospital; the motorcycle passenger, who was wearing a helmet, sustained non-life-threatening injuries; and the pickup's driver and passenger were evaluated at the scene and did not require hospital transport. The Pima County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate the crash, and no further information has been released as the inquiry proceeds.

KOLD and KVOA reports confirm the passenger was a woman who sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized along with Leon. The Pima County Sheriff's Department investigation remains ongoing with no charges filed.
