Mostly cloudy skies keep Phoenix highs a touch lower for Fourth of July weekend

High clouds and mostly cloudy conditions are expected to temper peak temperatures in the Phoenix area over the holiday weekend, with forecasters penciling in about 105°F for Saturday. Across Arizona, the warm holiday pattern will push overnight lows upward, with many locations seeing lows in the mid-80s and daytime readings approaching 110°F in spots.

The Phoenix area will see hot weather over the Fourth of July weekend, but forecasters say that a blanket of high and mostly cloudy skies will hold daytime maximums down a bit. Saturday’s high for Phoenix has been forecast at about 105°F — a figure meteorologists described as below the usual Fourth of July peak for the region. Forecast updates issued around the holiday underscore a consistent trend: warm conditions statewide, but not quite the record-busting heat some models had suggested for this particular weekend.

Meteorologists are tracking periods of high clouds that will especially affect southern parts of the state. Those clouds are expected to be most persistent through Saturday and into the holiday weekend, producing a generally hazy or partly overcast sky at times rather than relentless, unobstructed sun. Forecasters noted that while the clouds may temper the afternoon highs in Phoenix on certain days, temperatures across the region will nonetheless be unmistakably warm for the holiday.

The shift in cloud cover is also expected to alter overnight readings. Where residents in metro Phoenix recently enjoyed lows near the 70-degree mark, those cooler nights are likely to be interrupted for a stretch. Forecast guidance indicates that overnight lows through the weekend will climb, with many locations dropping only into the mid-80s rather than the cooler values seen earlier in the season.

Despite the dampening effect of clouds on some afternoons, some forecasts continue to show the potential for readings approaching the 110-degree mark during the Fourth of July weekend. Multiple local forecasts and meteorologists reiterated that temperatures could reach nearly 110°F in parts of the region over the holiday, even as the presence of cloud layers keeps certain daytime highs lower than what would occur under clear skies.

Local forecasters providing updates over the holiday included Paul Horton, whose noon First Alert forecast outlined the temperature trends, and Ian Schwartz, who presented a holiday outlook that echoed the expectation of near-110-degree conditions in some areas. Those briefings emphasized a consistent message: warm weather will be the rule across much of Arizona, punctuated by periods of high cloudiness that will influence both daytime and overnight numbers.

For now, the forecast picture is straightforward: a warm holiday weekend statewide with relatively higher overnight temperatures and daytime highs moderated somewhat by cloud cover at times. Saturday’s projected high of roughly 105°F in Phoenix stands out as a temperature that, while hot, represents a slightly cooler outcome than the hottest Fourth of July afternoons the region can experience. Forecasters continue to circulate updates and short-term analyses as conditions evolve through the weekend.

The National Weather Service Phoenix office echoed the cloudy pattern in its July 4 update, noting an abundance of mid- and high-level clouds with some locations possibly seeing a few sprinkles later in the day, while temperatures remain near or slightly below normal for the holiday. (@NWSPhoenix)

The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for Tuesday, July 7 through Thursday, July 9, saying a strengthening high‑pressure ridge will push temperatures well above normal next week with areas of Major HeatRisk developing across the lower deserts and into higher terrain east of Phoenix.

NWS Phoenix also posted holiday safety guidance noting a Moderate HeatRisk this weekend for the lower deserts, urging people to take heat precautions if outdoors and reminding residents to follow fireworks safety — including properly disposing of fireworks to help prevent ignitions.
