Major weekend closures and lane restrictions to affect Phoenix freeways May 15-18

Transportation officials have scheduled a series of overnight closures and lane restrictions across the Valley this weekend, affecting Interstate 10, State Route 51, Loop 101, Loop 202 and Loop 303. Work ranges from pavement repairs and widening projects to tunnel maintenance and the start of an interchange improvement effort, with detours and alternate routes posted for drivers.

Transportation officials warned Phoenix-area motorists to expect extensive overnight work on several Valley freeways this weekend, with full closures, lane reductions and ramp limitations scheduled from Friday night through Monday morning. The weekend freeway travel advisory lists a slate of projects intended to address pavement, tunnel and interchange needs on Interstate 10, State Route 51, Loop 101, Loop 202 and Loop 303, and it includes specific detours where possible.

Southbound State Route 51 will be closed between Northern Avenue and Highland Avenue, in the stretch south of Camelback Road, beginning at 9 p.m. Friday and lasting through 5 a.m. Monday for pavement improvements. Motorists traveling south on SR 51 are being directed to consider southbound Interstate 17 as an alternate freeway route. For drivers who exit southbound SR 51 at Northern Avenue, the advisory recommends using southbound 16th Street to connect to eastbound Highland Avenue or taking Indian School Road to return to the freeway.

Significant work will also begin on the Loop 101/I-10 connection in the West Valley. Southbound Loop 101 — the Agua Fria Freeway — will be closed between Indian School Road and Interstate 10 from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday as crews start the interchange improvement project. In addition to the mainline closure, southbound on-ramps at Cardinals Way and Camelback Road will be shut. Officials advised drivers to use southbound 91st Avenue or 99th Avenue to reach I-10 while closures are in effect. On the Pima Freeway section of Loop 101, lanes will be narrowed to two in both directions between Shea Boulevard and Princess Drive from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday while crews repair pavement; several southbound on- and off-ramps in that segment are expected to close intermittently.

Tunnel maintenance will temporarily close stretches of I-10 through central Phoenix. Eastbound I-10 will be shut between the I-17 "Stack" interchange and SR 51 beginning at 9 p.m. Friday and reopening at 9 a.m. Saturday to allow for work inside the Deck Park Tunnel. Drivers are advised to detour via southbound I-17 and rejoin I-10 near Sky Harbor Airport. East- and westbound sequencing continues later in the weekend: westbound I-10 will be closed between the I-17 split interchange and Seventh Avenue from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday for similar maintenance. Motorists impacted by the westbound closure can detour to northbound I-17 near Sky Harbor and reconnect to I-10 at the Stack interchange north of Van Buren Street.

Eastbound Loop 202, the Santan Freeway, will be reduced to two lanes between Arizona Avenue and McQueen Road from 10 p.m. Friday to 2 p.m. Saturday to accommodate a widening project. The eastbound on-ramp at Arizona Avenue will be closed during that period. Meanwhile, Lindsay Road ramps at Loop 202 are scheduled to be closed in both directions from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday. Separately, eastbound Loop 303 will be closed between 43rd Avenue and I-17 from 9 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m. Saturday for construction; drivers are advised to detour north on 43rd Avenue and head east on Dove Valley Road to reach I-17.

Officials emphasized that the weekend schedule includes a mix of full closures, ramp shutdowns and temporary lane reductions designed to accelerate work while minimizing impacts to daytime traffic. The interchange work between Loop 101 and I-10 marks the start of a multi-phase improvement project in the West Valley that requires extended overnight access to key ramps and highway segments. At other locations, crews are performing pavement repairs and tunnel upkeep that require complete stoppages of traffic through work zones for safety and efficiency.

Motorists are encouraged to plan alternate routes, allow for extra travel time and follow posted detours and signage through the affected corridors. Those who want frequent updates can receive traffic alerts by texting "TRAFFIC" to 620620. The weekend advisory lists exact closure windows and suggested detours for each impacted stretch of freeway; drivers should consult current traffic notices before heading out to confirm any last-minute changes to schedules or lane availability.
