A violent crash that involved two semitrucks and an SUV closed a major west Phoenix thoroughfare Sunday after first responders rushed to the scene. Emergency personnel were dispatched to the intersection of Buckeye Road and 71st Avenue shortly after 10:30 a.m., where authorities found significant vehicle damage and one occupant trapped. Officials extricated a man from his vehicle, and he was later pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Buckeye Road was shut down in both directions as investigators worked at the scene. Officers established a perimeter and directed traffic away from the intersection while crews cleared wreckage and collected evidence. No additional details about the circumstances that led to the collision have been released, and investigators said they were still working to determine what happened.

Photographs from the scene show heavy damage to an SUV and the presence of a semitruck trailer nearby, with law enforcement personnel standing amid the wreckage. Debris littered the roadway and responders remained on scene for hours as they processed the area. Authorities urged drivers to avoid the stretch of Buckeye Road while the investigation and cleanup were underway.

Police have not released the identity of the man who died nor any information about the drivers of the semitrucks. Officials also have not disclosed whether anyone else was injured in the crash. At the time crews were responding, authorities maintained the closure to preserve the scene and allow investigators to gather information about the collision’s sequence and contributing factors.

Buckeye Road is a primary east-west corridor in west Phoenix, and the closure at the 71st Avenue intersection produced traffic disruptions in the surrounding neighborhoods. City traffic advisories asked motorists to find alternate routes and to expect delays in the area while the scene remained active. Drivers approaching the area were advised to follow directions from officers on site.

Investigators handling the situation described the response as ongoing and said more information would be released when available. Authorities reminded the public that details remain preliminary while law enforcement completes its on-scene work. Officials did not provide a timeline for when Buckeye Road might reopen.

This remains a developing story. Additional information will be reported as police release details from their investigation and as conditions at the scene change.
