Marine Corps officials said the blaze originated in the right nacelle, the housing that contains the right engine and associated components. A video posted by a local pilot showed the right engine housing engulfed in flames and black smoke as emergency responders worked on the scene. The footage captured the rapid arrival of airport fire crews and their use of firefighting foam to knock down the flames. Observers at the airport and the aircrew reported that the evacuation proceeded without injury, and base personnel confirmed that all aboard the aircraft walked away from the incident.
Maj. Joe Leitner, the director of communication strategy and operations for the 2nd Aircraft Wing, confirmed that a mishap investigation is underway. Military investigators have not yet released an estimate of the damage or information about the cost of repairs. Officials emphasized that assessments typically follow an initial on-scene response and that mechanics and crash investigators will inspect the aircraft components to determine the origin and sequence of the malfunction that led to the fire.

In December 2023, the entire Osprey fleet was grounded following a crash of an Air Force CV-22B off the coast of Japan that killed eight airmen; investigators later traced that accident to a failed left-hand prop rotor gearbox. Earlier mishaps, including a 2022 incident linked to a sprag clutch — the component that helps keep the rotors synchronized — have also figured into broader safety reviews.
The site of Sunday’s fire is in the same general region as some earlier, high-profile Osprey accidents. Roughly 65 miles away from Mesa lies the location of the Marine Corps’ deadliest V-22 accident, a night training crash near Tucson in 2000 that claimed 19 Marines. That earlier mishap was attributed at the time to pilot error during a steep descent, and subsequent inquiries offered additional context and review of the circumstances surrounding the flight. In the wake of each major event, military aviation authorities have conducted technical and procedural reviews aimed at improving safety and reliability across the V-22 community.
Despite the controversies, the Department of Defense continues to rely on the V-22 platform. DoD procurement records show 469 Ospreys have been acquired for use by the Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force, and production of the type is scheduled to continue through fiscal year 2028. MV-22s also participated in high-profile public operations earlier this year, including a large July 4th military flyover in Washington, D.C.; officials confirmed the aircraft involved in Sunday’s incident was not part of that demonstration. For now, the most immediate concerns remain on-site: the aircraft has been secured, firefighting crews have controlled the blaze, and investigators will take apart affected components to determine the cause.
The mishap will be cataloged alongside other incidents involving the V-22 platform and reviewed by the appropriate aviation safety and maintenance authorities. Aviation Safety Network lists the involved aircraft as serial number 168222 and notes it sustained substantial damage from the right engine fire during startup at about 5:55 p.m. local time. The Marine Corps has not issued further updates on the mishap investigation beyond initial statements.
The mishap occurred on July 19, 2026, in the early evening; Mesa Fire & Medical Department units rushed to Phoenix‑Mesa Gateway Airport at about 6:00 p.m. local time and deployed specialized Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting equipment and foam agents to bring the blaze under control.
On July 20, Marine Corps spokesperson 1st Lt. Callin Duffy issued a statement confirming the aircraft involved belonged to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, that the right nacelle caught fire during startup on the ground, and that the incident remains under investigation.
Ryan Smith, director of communications and government relations for the Mesa Gateway Airport Authority, said the aircraft was grounded while emergency teams secured the area.
