The Willmeng Arizona Celebration of Freedom will transform downtown Mesa into an Independence Day festival on Saturday, July 4, running from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Now in its 17th year, the event this summer dovetails with the nation's 250th birthday — the semiquincentennial — and will include a birthday observance complete with cupcakes and a rendition of "Happy Birthday." Admission to the event is free, and organizers say the program is intended as a community salute to the nation and to those who serve.
Attendees should plan their evening around a lineup of signature moments that culminate in a traditional fireworks display. The Salute to America program is scheduled to begin at 9:15 p.m., with the fireworks show lighting the Mesa sky at approximately 9:30 p.m. Adding a contemporary layer to the evening, the festival will also present a drone show this year. Sponsored by NTT Global Data Centers and operated by Pulse Drones, the display will deploy about 200 drones to form patriotic images in celebration of the semiquincentennial.

A substantial portion of programming is located inside the air-conditioned Mesa Convention Center, where visitors can move indoors to escape the July heat. The Convention Center will house the Hall of U.S. Flags, a display that presents the banners of all 50 states alongside material about the history of U.S. flags, and the Fallen Soldiers Memorial. The indoor venue will also host Phoenix Championship Wrestling this year; the wrestling matches, with their signature moves and personalities, will take place inside the Convention Center and will be punctuated by the Let Freedom Ring Laser Light Show, which opens the night and reappears between matches.
Music and military ceremonies are spread between the Convention Center and the Mesa Amphitheatre. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Arizona Band is set to perform patriotic selections at the Mesa Amphitheatre beginning at 8 p.m. Military recruiting teams from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps will be on site and the 108th U.S. Army Band will play before an Army enlistment ceremony scheduled to be held at the Amphitheatre. Those who want to view historic equipment can find an expanded Patriotic Military Showcase outdoors, with more than 25 vintage military vehicles on display.
The outdoor military lineup includes a selection of historic jeeps and other vehicles — among them a 1942 GPW Jeep, a 1945 MB Willys and a 1952 M38A1 Jeep — and aircraft such as a T33 "T Bird" and an MD500 Little Bird helicopter. Recruiters from the different service branches will be present at the showcase area, and the on-site schedule lists the Army enlistment ceremony as part of the evening's program. Those interested in military history and hardware will be able to walk among the vehicles and aircraft set out along the festival footprint.
Family-oriented attractions and hands-on experiences are also a major part of the festival. Outdoor highlights include BMX Patriotic Superhero Stunt Shows featuring high-flying tricks and jumps, and the Great All-American Freedom Farm, which will present a collection of vintage and modern tractors and other agricultural equipment while offering context about Arizona's farming roots. For younger visitors and families seeking relief from the heat, the Splash Zone will feature inflatable waterslides, a consistently popular way to cool off during the holiday celebration.

Organizers have emphasized multiple cooling and hydration options across the site. In addition to the air-conditioned Convention Center, the festival will offer a mist-chilled outdoor food court and designated Cool Zones equipped with misting trailers and tents. Mesa Water Resources will operate a free water bar, and attendees are asked to Bring Your Own Bottle to refill as needed; water fountains are also available inside the Convention Center. While admission is free, food and drinks are sold on site and beverages including beer will be available for purchase. Event operations will be cashless this year, with all on-site transactions conducted without cash.
