The incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of 40th Street and University Drive. Mesa police officers were on the scene and detained a suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Nathaniel Gotham, who was booked on a charge of attempted second-degree murder. Beyond the arrest and booking, authorities have provided only a limited amount of information. Investigators have not released the identity of the victim, nor have they detailed the events that led up to the stabbing. The investigation remains active as detectives work to piece together the sequence of events and motives, if any.

At the scene, officers secured the area and conducted their initial inquiries. Witnesses and neighbors in the vicinity of the apartment complex saw police activity and a visible law enforcement presence while emergency personnel tended to the injured party. Police described the victim's wounds as serious at the time of discovery. The suspect was detained at the location and subsequently taken into custody and booked on the attempted second-degree murder charge, according to official records released following the incident.

Police have not disclosed whether there were witnesses who provided statements at the scene or whether any arrests were made in addition to the suspect who was detained. Officials also did not provide information about any potential weapon recovered by investigators or about any relationship between the suspect and the victim. Those details have not been publicly released as the investigation continues, and investigators have indicated that further information will be released as it becomes available and appropriate for public disclosure.

The victim was transported to a hospital near the scene after officers discovered what they described as injuries consistent with multiple stab wounds. Hospital officials and law enforcement later reported that the victim’s condition had stabilized by July 12, and the injuries were not considered life-threatening at that time. No additional medical details, including the identity of the hospital or the identity of the patient, have been released to the public.

Authorities have acknowledged there are unanswered questions about how the incident unfolded. They have not provided a timeline of events preceding the discovery of the victim, nor have they clarified what prompted the initial police response to that particular location. It also has not been publicly explained why Mesa police were the responding agency at a scene in Phoenix; the jurisdictional details that led Mesa officers to that address have not been described in the statements released so far. Investigators continue to review evidence, interview potential witnesses and examine any forensic material collected at the scene as part of the active investigation.

For now, the case remains under active investigation. Officials have confirmed the charge of attempted second-degree murder against the man booked in connection with the incident. Beyond the booking and the hospital status update provided the day after the stabbing, law enforcement has withheld additional details, citing the ongoing nature of the probe. As investigators continue to gather information and determine what led to the violent encounter, authorities said they will disclose further findings when appropriate and as the investigation permits.

Prosecutors later revealed Gotham confessed to stabbing his wife of four years 24 times, mostly in the back as she tried to escape, after calling 911 himself and admitting "I did it, it's all my fault" because he wanted to make her stop talking. He had previously choked her during an argument years earlier and is held on $500,000 bond ahead of a July 17 hearing, according to Maricopa County officials and azfamily.com.

Court records show Nathaniel Gotham was formally charged with attempted first-degree murder and is being held at the Lower Buckeye Jail; a preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 21.

A probable-cause affidavit describes officers finding Gotham mounted on top of the victim with the apartment’s front door open and blood throughout the entryway, and detectives recovered a blood-covered kitchen steak knife from the floor that investigators say was likely the weapon.

Police and medical reports in the affidavit state the victim suffered 16 stab wounds to her back along with additional stab wounds and lacerations to her head, neck and face and defensive wounds to her hands; the affidavit also says Gotham told investigators he “snapped,” described a long relationship (about 14 years, four married) and attempted to call family members after the attack.
