A 17-year-old girl from Arizona was fatally shot while eight months pregnant during a family vacation in California, family members say. The victim has been identified as Jariah Edwards. Her aunt, who asked not to be named, described her niece as “genuinely like one of the sweetest people” and said Edwards had recently begun to “grow into herself and becoming, you know, who she was supposed to be.”

Law enforcement responded to a shooting call outside a rental home at roughly 1 a.m. on Saturday and discovered the pregnant teenager with a gunshot wound to the head. Edwards was rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical staff performed an emergency cesarean delivery. Hospital officials were unable to save Edwards, who died of her injuries; the newborn was delivered alive but remains in critical condition, family members said.
Police said the suspect arrived at the rental property unexpectedly and that the confrontation led to the shooting. Officers later located and arrested a 21-year-old man identified as Trevon Williams, who they said had a semi-automatic handgun and was hiding in a nearby neighborhood when they found him. Williams is facing several felony counts tied to the incident.

Family members said Edwards was on the trip with relatives when her ex-boyfriend allegedly showed up at the home. Those who knew her spoke about her plans and the excitement she had for the baby, a girl she was expecting to welcome in just a few weeks. “She was so excited,” her aunt said, describing the young woman as ambitious and talented and looking forward to motherhood.
Relatives added that Edwards did not have the opportunity to name or hold her newborn. They said they will carry the memory of her and the brief life of the child she brought into the world. “Her legacy is that her daughter is going to be everything she wanted to be and so much more, and she should be proud of that,” the aunt said.
A fundraiser has been launched to help cover medical bills and other needs for the infant, and family members asked for privacy as they grieve. The shooting is the third in recent weeks to involve a pregnant teenager from Arizona, a pattern that has prompted comment from local service providers. Tanner Swanson, a spokesperson for the nonprofit A New Leaf, said, “Things like this are preventable; they can be stopped before they happen.” Swanson added that a range of factors contributes to elevated risks for pregnant people in certain situations, emphasizing the complexity of those circumstances.
The deadly encounter also echoes findings in a 2025 national study by the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, which listed homicide and suicide among the leading causes of maternal deaths in the United States. The study and the string of recent incidents have raised concerns among advocates and service providers about the safety and protection of pregnant adolescents.
Authorities have said the suspect was arrested without further incident and that he faces multiple felony charges related to the shooting. Investigators continue to piece together the events that led up to the confrontation at the rental property, and no additional information about motive or the status of any criminal proceedings has been released.
Family members described Edwards as a young woman with plans and promise who was excited about becoming a mother. They said she was preparing for the arrival of her daughter and that the news of the shooting stunned relatives and friends. A GoFundMe page was set up to assist with the newborn’s medical expenses and immediate needs, and family spokespeople asked that anyone who wishes to help use that avenue so they can focus on caring for the baby and handling funeral arrangements.
The arrest of the 21-year-old suspect closed one chapter of the case, but questions remain for investigators and for Edwards’ family. Law enforcement has not released additional details about potential charges or a court date. Meanwhile, those close to Edwards continue to mourn a life cut short and to monitor the newborn’s condition at the hospital.
