LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska’s bid to advance out of its NCAA Regional came to an end Sunday afternoon as Arizona State’s offense proved decisive in an 11-8 victory that eliminated the Cornhuskers and concluded a 43-17 season. The Sun Devils struck first and repeatedly seized momentum, while Nebraska’s comeback efforts late in the game fell short, bringing the historic home regional run to a close.
The scoring began in the opening frame when Nu'u Contrades launched a solo home run to give Arizona State an early 1-0 advantage. Nebraska answered in the third inning when Joshua Overbeek tied the game with a solo blast of his own, briefly halting the Sun Devils’ momentum. That respite proved short-lived: Arizona State erupted in the bottom of the third, producing four runs on four hits and benefitting from a Nebraska fielding error. The rally was capped by a two-run homer from Dominic Longo that pushed the visitors ahead and swung the game firmly back to the Sun Devils.
Arizona State continued to add insurance runs after that big third inning. Dominic Smaldino homered in the fifth to extend the lead, and then delivered again in the sixth with a grand slam — a blast noted by game coverage as the program’s nation-leading 12th grand slam of the season. Those swings expanded Arizona State’s advantage and placed Nebraska in a large deficit early in the middle innings, a gap the Cornhuskers would spend the remainder of the game attempting to erase.
Despite entering the regional with one of the nation’s top defensive marks, Nebraska was unable to avoid miscues in key moments that helped Arizona State seize control. The Sun Devils built an 11-1 lead in the middle innings, forcing the Cornhuskers into a comeback mode. Nebraska responded with urgency, chipping away at the margin over the final frames as the offense produced several rallies that kept the home crowd engaged and the outcome in doubt until the final outs.
The Husker lineup manufactured a major response in the seventh inning, plating five runs that included run-producing hits from Rhett Stokes and Mac Moyer. That uprising narrowed the margin significantly and put renewed pressure on Arizona State’s bullpen. Nebraska added two more runs in the ninth, bringing the tying run into reach and setting up a late-inning push, but the Sun Devils were able to hold on at the plate and on the mound to secure the 11-8 win and advance in the tournament.
Nebraska head coach Will Bolt spoke to reporters after the game, reflecting on the season and the squad’s accomplishments while acknowledging the abrupt end to a campaign that delivered milestones for the program. Bolt noted that the team accomplished something significant by bringing an NCAA Regional to Lincoln for the first time since 2008, and he described the season as one that produced a foundation for the future. He reiterated his belief that the players were true to their commitments and that the group had overachieved in many respects this year.
