A U.S. Air Force V-22 Osprey experienced an engine fire at Mesa Gateway Airport Sunday evening at about 6 p.m., with reports of flames from one engine.
Mesa Fire & Medical Department and airport rescue crews responded immediately, deploying specialized Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) units to the scene.
Crews used advanced foam agents designed for aviation fuel fires to smother the blaze and brought the engine fire under control.
Emergency personnel confirmed there were no injuries to the aircraft’s crew or to the firefighters who fought the fire.
Airport officials identified the aircraft as a military V-22 Osprey; the tiltrotor was kept on the ground while teams secured the area.
Responders stabilized the aircraft, isolated any remaining hazards and worked methodically to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.
The origin of the engine fire is under investigation; authorities launched an inquiry but have not released additional details about the cause.
Officials said the Osprey remained grounded as investigators examined the aircraft; no changes to airport operations have been announced so far.
