A pre-dawn shooting occurred about 2 a.m. in downtown Tucson near Empire Pizza at Congress Street and Sixth Avenue after officers on foot patrol reported hearing gunfire.
Officers encountered an armed individual at the scene and fired; the suspect was critically wounded and transported to a hospital with life‑threatening injuries.
Responders located nine additional people who had been struck by gunfire. Emergency personnel provided aid and transported the nine victims to area hospitals, where they were reported in critical condition.
Police established a secure perimeter and closed the Ronstadt Transit Center while investigators processed the cordoned‑off area, collected evidence, and interviewed witnesses through the night.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is leading the criminal investigation into the officer‑involved shooting while Tucson Police opened a separate internal review; findings will be forwarded to the Pima County Attorney.
Empire Pizza said two of those shot were on its patio when an argument escalated. Mayor Regina Romero called the incident 'another serious and senseless act of gun violence' and investigators asked the public to share any information.
