Mesa officers found the body of 47-year-old Jerry Dietch in an east Mesa alley near Hibbert and Broadway around 6:30 a.m. on May 12, 2025. Investigators said he had obvious signs of trauma and believe the killing occurred the night before.
Homicide detectives released a still image from a nearby security camera showing an unidentified man in the vicinity around the time investigators believe the crime occurred and asked the public to help identify him.
The person in the footage is seen wearing a light-colored hoodie, dark pants and shoes. Detectives highlighted the individual’s distinctive gait and said the person appeared to be wearing gloves, a detail they consider significant.
Police have withheld specifics about the manner of death to avoid compromising investigative leads. Detectives continue to process the scene, review available footage and canvass the neighborhood for additional images and witnesses.
Mesa detectives urged anyone who recognizes the man in the image or anyone who was in the Hibbert and Broadway area the night of May 11 into May 12 to contact investigators. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Silent Witness.
On July 16, 2026, Mesa police released new surveillance video showing the hooded figure pacing near parked cars before running from the area. Detectives request tips at 480-644-2211 or via Silent Witness (480‑WITNESS/480‑TESTIGO); rewards up to $2,000 may apply.
