Chandler detectives moved to arrest a man in Tempe Friday evening after linking him to an alleged aggravated assault in Chandler about two weeks earlier.
Shortly before 8 p.m., the man ran on foot into an apartment complex near Scottsdale and McKellips roads as officers attempted to detain him, according to police.
Police say the confrontation escalated after the suspect produced a firearm; officers opened fire. The weapon was recovered at the scene.
Officers rendered medical aid at the location and firefighters later pronounced the man dead. Officials have not released his name.
The Mesa Police Department’s East Valley Critical Incident Response Team is leading the independent criminal investigation on behalf of Tempe.
Chandler officials said the detectives involved were assigned to the Special Investigations Section and that the arrest attempt stemmed from the alleged Chandler assault; no charges have been announced.
A nearby Ring camera recorded multiple gunshots and a radio call reporting an officer-involved shooting. Tempe procedures call for a criminal probe, an administrative review, and possible citizen panel oversight.
