Man fatally stabbed near McDowell Road and Loop 202 in Mesa, suspect…

Mesa police responded about 10:20 p.m. Saturday to a residence near McDowell Road and the Loop 202 after a report of a stabbing; officers found a man with multiple stab wounds.

Emergency medical crews and first responders attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead there; authorities initially did not release the victim's identity.

A suspect was detained at the scene without incident. Police said photographs related to the case, including booking images, were released as part of the investigation's public record.

Mesa police described the matter as an active investigation; detectives are examining evidence, reviewing records and interviewing witnesses to determine what occurred inside the residence.

Updated reporting identified the victim as 82-year-old Ed Copley and the arrested suspect as 41-year-old Christina Copley, who was booked on a second-degree murder charge with bond set at $500,000.

Court records say Christina Copley went to a neighbor's home carrying a bloodied 13-inch kitchen knife, claimed self-defense, later admitted to 'swinging' the knife, and has a history of mental-health issues and prior domestic violence calls.
