Gilbert police responded just before 11 p.m. on Aug. 1 to a home near Lindsay and Elliot after a caller reported someone in a detached structure had been stabbed; officers arrived to a chaotic scene and heard a woman screaming inside.
Officers located multiple victims with obvious injuries and a man matching the caller’s description; the man ran deeper into the house and an officer discharged a firearm when he entered a bedroom.
Three people inside the home had been stabbed: a man was found dead at the residence; two women were taken to hospitals, one later died and the other has non-life-threatening injuries. With the suspect among the dead, officials say three people lost their lives.
Police have not released identities, a motive, or whether weapons were recovered; investigators have withheld many specifics as the inquiry continues.
The East Valley Critical Incident Response Team has been assigned to review the officer-involved shooting, with the Mesa Police Department designated as the primary investigative agency.
Officers established a perimeter and a mobile command presence and worked through the night to secure and document the scene; no additional arrests have been announced and authorities ask anyone with information to come forward.
