Crews were dispatched to South Mountain Park's Bursera Trailhead around 4 p.m. after reports of a hiker in distress. Technical rescue teams hiked into the area to reach an adult man on the trail.
Rescuers conducted an initial evaluation and began providing immediate care aimed at stabilizing the hiker before moving him off the route.
Responders administered fluids and active cooling on scene. Those measures improved the man's condition enough for him to start descending the trail under escort.
Rescue personnel guided and assisted the hiker as he walked back toward the trailhead, rather than immediately moving him by litter or other transport methods.
At the trailhead paramedics performed a secondary evaluation, then transported the man to a nearby hospital for further monitoring and treatment. Officials reported he was in stable condition.
No responders were injured during the operation. Officials noted the incident highlights heat-related risks on South Mountain; the hikers were in their 60s and had hiked about two miles from the trailhead.
