A midmorning call just before noon reported a man and woman in their 60s suffering heat exhaustion about two miles into Scottsdale’s Gateway Loop Trail.
Scottsdale and Phoenix fire crews were dispatched and staged near Thompson Peak Parkway. Multiple engine companies, rescue teams and support personnel were assigned to reach the hikers.
More than 25 firefighters and emergency personnel responded. Four Scottsdale Fire e-bikes outfitted with advanced life‑support gear were sent up the trail to reach the patients faster.
Crews evaluated evacuation options including using a utility vehicle partway on the trail and a single‑wheel, all‑terrain stretcher (big‑wheel) to move patients over rough desert terrain.
After crews reached and treated the pair, the man and woman declined transport and no hospital transport was reported. No further medical details were released by responding units.
The response occurred during an extreme heat warning for the Valley. Officials emphasized heat‑safety guidance: hike early, carry plenty of water, avoid midday heat and turn back at the first sign of heat illness.
