An active monsoon will persist across southern Arizona through the weekend, keeping the region at risk for thunderstorms capable of producing strong winds, blowing dust and localized flooding.
The greatest chances for heavy rain remain east and south of Tucson—especially Cochise County and near the international border—but the Tucson metro still has a meaningful shot at storms, mainly afternoon and evening.
Damaging straight‑line winds are the primary hazard; thunderstorms could produce gusts around 60 mph or higher, able to knock down branches, damage unsecured objects and reduce visibility.
Intense brief downpours and slow‑moving cells can cause rapid runoff and localized flash flooding in washes, low‑lying streets and areas with poor drainage.
The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Watch for portions of southeast Arizona, including Graham, Greenlee, Cochise and Santa Cruz counties, noting possible 1 to 3 inches of rain and elevated runoff risk.
Daytime highs are expected near the low 100s with overnight lows in the mid to upper 70s; the heat and humidity will maintain atmospheric instability and help fuel convective storms.
Meteorologist Cuyler Diggs says the monsoon should remain active through the weekend and advises residents to be prepared for thunderstorms and to monitor local forecasts and any flash‑flood or severe‑weather warnings.
