Just after midnight Saturday, a motorcycle crash at East Speedway Boulevard and North Richey Boulevard left a 19-year-old rider dead. He was taken to Banner University Medical Center where he later died; police identified him as Jaycob Christopher Nieto and notified family.
Police said the collision involved a motorcycle and a silver 2012 Hyundai Tucson that was turning left from westbound Speedway onto southbound Richey when it was struck by the eastbound motorcycle.
Witnesses told officers the motorcyclist was traveling well above the posted speed limit at the time of the crash.
Officers reported Nieto held a valid motorcycle endorsement and was wearing a helmet when the collision occurred.
Police said the Hyundai driver, a 60-year-old, was not found to be impaired; no further details about injuries to the driver or any passengers were provided in the initial report.
Investigators determined the Hyundai driver's failure to yield on the left turn and the motorcyclist's excessive speed were contributing factors. The probe is ongoing, no charges have been filed, and any impairment on Nieto's part will be evaluated through medical records.
